SIMULBLOG FOR SONICS V. NETS

NETS 109 SONICS 99 FINAL SCORE
At 103-97 Jefferson just made a great shot. That is the tough thing about playing from behind. Great players made great plays.
Great play out of the timeout by Weiss for a Vlady 3
Another bad possession on an airball three by Allen. Luke blew it up after a dribble off his foot.
Vlady committed a poor foul giving Kidd two free throws.

Nets 99 Sonics 90 with 2:55 left in the 4th Quarter
Offensively Seattle just doesn’t have the late game flow they need.
They have converted on just 2 of the last 9 possessions.
They were: Cleaves missed layup, Allen no quick 3, Kidd steal, Lewis bucket, Lewis no 3, Ridnour missed drive, Vlady no on a covered 3, Petro follow for 2, Ridnour no on open 3. They are missing some shots they need to make and one or two poor possessions really cost you at this point in the game.

New Jersey 87 Sonics 84 with 8:42 left in the 4th Quarter
Ray Allen got his first field goal on the first play of the 4th Quarter
I can begin to understand why the coaches struggle with Vlady. He went soft to a loss ball with the score 83-78. It would have been a huge turnover. Instead NJ converted.
But his ability to stretch the floor and hit the 3 is s dynamic. That is the Vlady dilemma

Nets 79 Sonics 70 end of 3rd Quarter
The Sonics defensive plan is working and they are still down
Kidd is 2 of 10; Carter is 3 of 8; Jefferson is 4 of 9.
You would take that every night. However, Krstic is killing them.
That is because they have not had good enough spaced help defense.
This one is getting away. The offensive flow has disappeared.
Mikki Moore has been a disaster. He has two turnovers and is getting beat down low.
All off season we thought Damien Wilkins was a good defensive player and I have not seen it yet this season.
I know Vlady has been poor but down 11 points I would think that he is a better choice then Moore.

Nets 67 Sonics 61 with 5:00 left in the 3rd Quarter
Sonics on a 7-0 run
The Sonics got their first stop of the quarter at 5:30 on the Nets 10th possession of the 3rd Quarter.
The Nets are putting Carter on Ridnour so that he can become a freelancer doubling team and raising havoc.
Danny Fortson is out for the rest of the game.
Ray Allen still doesn’t have a field goal.

Nets 63 Sonics 52 with 7:37 left in the 3rd Quarter
Nets come out of the half and score on 7 straight possessions
The Sonics defensive rebounding has been poor this year and it is bad to start the quarter. Three of the Nets scores are off offensive rebounds.
Carter has been matching up on Ridnour.
Lewis keeps giving Jefferson one step too many on the three. You have to respect his drive but Lewis is long enough that he should be able to close tighter.
The Nets have made some nice adjustments off the Sonics double teams.

Sonics 48 Nets 48 at the Half
Reggie Evans clogs the floor terribly. Plus, his incompetence at the line is death.
The halfcourt execution has been very good at times.
The thing that jumps out to me is when this team shots early in a possession or in transition the shots are not falling. This means transition for the other side.
I like that Ridnour is showing a willingness to shot even though he has been struggling. They are not forced shots and if teams are going to leave him he has to make the shot or this team will never win.

Sonics 41 Nets 41 with 2:08 in the 2nd Quarter
The offensive drought hit again midway through the 2nd quarter.
Ray Allen is not on his game tonight

Sonics 27 Nets 19 end of 1st Quarter
Everyone I talk to about the Nets talk about Kristic as a future start
Cliff Robinson playing instead of a Jason Collins is a big deal. Collins is one of the ebst defensive players in the NBA and Robinson is very poor.
Without question the Sonics best defensive quarter.
Nick Collison has been amazing. Two put backs and two 18 foot jumpers.
If Collison hits the 18 footer this team gets tough and he becomes a huge asset.
Collison has 8 points and 4 rebounds in the first quarter
The Nets were 8 for 21 from the field.

Sonics 11 Nets 2 with 7:38 left in the 1st Quarter
Petro throws a very good outlet pass and that might get the Sonics running.
On a few fast breaks early the Sonics have done a better job spacing the floor and this has opened up driving lanes.
Flip Murray is out with back spasms for at least the first half. Sonics made a nice move having Cleaves active.
The Sonics defense is holding the Nets to outside 18 footers and that is not a strength of Carter and Jefferson.

Sonics inactives
: Brunson, Potapenko and Swift

Storylines

1) Can the Sups guard Carter and Jefferson
2) Was Collison's 20-10 night a fluje or is he a legit starter?
3) Ridnour against Kidd without AD to help him out.
4) Sonics defensive rebounding (#30 in the NBA) against the Nets offensive rebounding (#3 in the NBA)

We can only pray the back of FLip puts him out till at least the All star break

Carter can never stay healthy....and with Petro on the floor they are a better team

Diezel said...

Are we just gonna go 4 headed monster at center all year and just rotate between Petro, Swift, Vitaly, and Mikki moore..Locke when does the NBDL start up by the way??is Robert going for sure and what about Petro??

Sonic EJ said...

Collison looks great!

Diezel said...

yes sir....I guess the Toronto game wasnt a fluke

Diezel said...

Vlades first 3 no good= bad sign for the rest of the night

Sonic EJ said...

Vlade had a great pass to Rashard for his three.

Diezel said...

i didnt see that im at work and have to listen online which sucks because at home I can mute Ehlo but not on the radio....Ehlo must go!!!!!

Anonymous said...

NBDL starts Friday. Scales and Felix have not signed yet and I'd guess will go overseas for more money.

Sonic EJ said...

Sorry Diezel...I was trippin. Vlade sucks. He can't even grab a rebound!

Sonic EJ said...

'the human highlight film'

Anonymous said...

Swift might get one more look in the bigs before they decide whether to send him down. Seems like it would be fair and help keep him from getting crushed by it.

Diezel said...

No get him in the NBDL asap!!!! he just needs to play period and not be in a dang suit all season

Diezel said...

Petro gets no love from the Refs!!!

Sonic EJ said...

J-Kidd is locking up Allen. This Net defense is better than I thought.

Sonic EJ said...

At least Reggie Rebounds. Half the time I think Reggie needs to be on the floor to make up for Rashard and Ray and Vlade's lack of effort on the boards.

Also, I know Reggie sucks at the free throw line but he is one of the few guys on the team who are agressive enought to get to the line. He shoots like 60% so it is not that bad.

Diezel said...

kristic or Swift??? U make the call.

Sonic EJ said...

The Nets can straight shut you down for streches. I'm shocked at how together they play and how tight their rotations are at times. Luke just hit a nice three to bail out the offense.

Sonic EJ said...

Luke sucks. His lack of size and strength is death for Seattle in the half court.

Sonic EJ said...

Moore is up for the worst Sonics of the decade award.

He comes in the game and, right off the bat, give up an And-1 to Kristic. Kristic misses the free throw and Moore gives up an offensive board on the miss. Then a couple of plays latter Moore throw a perfect outlit pass to start a Net fast break. The front court of Reggie and Moore is very bad.

The biggest thing the Sonics are missing this year is a physical presence they had all last year. Do you all remember how Danny Fortson transformed what was expected to be a soft finesse team into a bruising tough hard nosed team? The best evidence of this is that we are last in the league in defensive rebounding this year, we are getting beat on points in the paint every game and it seems like everyone else is driving with no fear into the paint this year.

Besides Allen, the biggest offseason priority for the Sonics should have been Antonio Daniels. You can't let that type of player go and expect his role to be filled in by non-leaders and selfish players. Last season was an abberation, everything fell into place and was backed by one of the greatest culmination of coaches on one bench. Now all of the key pieces are gone, and once again Walker and Sund are exposed for the frauds they truly are. It's time for Mr. Starbucks to break that pathetic lease with the city of Seattle and start building a new state-of-the-art home across the water in Bellevue. Take a page out of Detroits book and go where the money is. Seattle as a city does not support this franchise and it is killing their ability to produce a competitive team on the court. This franchise can't afford five more years of guarenteed losses. By then they will have turned into the Warriors. And having lived a few years in the Bay Area, there is nothing sadder than never having an opportunity to be excited about your basketball team.

It's too bad the Huskies don't play 82 games. They are a constant reminder of what the right people at the top who bring the right philosiphy can do with a little talent. The Sonics this offseason did the exact opposite of what the Seahawks did. They brought back low-character, selfish players like Vlady and Flip, and let Allen's right-hand man walk. Of course Walker and Sund then bring in Clipper rejects and assume that two all-stars can get the job done on their own. I've said it since Whitsitt left, with Walker making decisions, this team will start on a steady decline. He hasn't dissapointed. Blow it up. Blow it all up from the President on down, and get the heck out of that lease.

Anonymous said...

The worst thing that could happen for this team is start winning and finish 9th or 10th in the West. They need to get a top 3 pick. Vlady is gone, thank god, next year. Evans and Flip will walk as well. This team needs to add a big-time player with a big-time presence. Rashard will always be a nice player, but he is not a big-time presence. And as much as Allen can fill up the cup, there are ways to blanket shooters, and render them inneffective in terms of their team's success, case in point - Kobe in LA. This team has got to find a Duncan-esque presence down low.

Myk said...

Anon,

You are stupid if you think that the Sonics should have given AD that kind of money for five years. Just flat out stupid. There is no way that he would have been able to give you the production you want for those five years at the price you are paying for him

Myk said...

Anon,

I sure hope all those posts weren't by the same person, but being how stupid they all are it has to be the same person...

Cmon everyone Anon has a genius plan we need to get a Tim Duncan'esque player. I wish that I would have thought of that. You think that if we package Mikki Moore and Robert Swift that San Antonio will trade Duncan to us?

Sonic EJ said...

I agree with every word anon said. That was great.

Anonymous said...

You have no conception of what a player like Daniels brings to a basketball team. You already have scorers on the court, Daniels production can be found in other areas. Such as assist to turnover ratio, such as vocal leadership in the local room, such as unselfish play on the court. I suppose you think that 20 dribbles and a rushed shot is effective basketball. Antonio Daniels is the epitome of an effective role player in this league and you need not look any further than the Wizards this season to see his positive effect on the court. The Sonics offered 23 million, the Wizards topped that by seven million. Considering the Sonics offered Vlady forty million for a guy that can't even find his way of Weiss' bench, perhaps some thought should have been given to keeping the emotional leader on the team. The Sonics have lacked a legitimate big man for decades now, their fulility there is obvious. Finding a Duncan-esque athlete does not mean Duncan himself. The problem with the Sonics is that when they miss the playoffs they hover around .500, rather than performing at a level that would afford them the type of dividend-producing draft choice they covet. A Chris Bosh type player, found in the early stages of a draft is something that would benefit the club immensely.

Myk said...

Anon,

- My point about Daniels was that he was great last year..and in the end that will have been his career year. He hasn't been playing that well in Washington and is bound to go down hill as he gets older. I agree that we need a player to fit in the Antonio Daniels role from last year (big guard from the bench who can score and distribute) but that does not mean that the Antonio Daniels of this year would have been that same player. Can't just freeze time and get the same production from a player year over year (especially once he hits 30)

- Vlade is a perfect example of why you can't expect Daniels to bring the same production. At the end of the year I think people would have been ok with a 6 year 40 million dollar contract...but his performance this year is proving that the Sonics were smart (not that anyone will ever admit to that...) to stick to their guns and not give them the money. They should have done the same thing with Damien and yet most of the people on this board felt that we should match his offer sheet...looks like that wasnt a great move.

- Finally, it is just total crap that you can come on here and advocate the Sonics getting a high draft pick and holding it against them that they don't just ship out their players to ensure they get top draft picks. First off, has that strategy worked for the Magic? Hawks? Clippers? Second off, all of you would be bitching and moaning if they did anything of the sort. You can't complain about not winning and then bitch when they don't win enough...those are mutually exclusive arguments.

Sonic EJ said...

Anon,

I agreee, what this team needs more than anything is a top 5 draft pick. I have been saying that for about 5 years. If we continue to draft in the 10-20 range we are not going to get the players we need. This roster has no hope of ever winning anything without the aid of a big man who can play.

Myk,

You are a Moron.

Biggie said...

Myk,

Damn dude some cat who doesn't even have a name is more hoop savvy than you, MORON.

"I suppose you think that 20 dribbles and a rushed shot is effective basketball."

Hey, that's basically AD's game!

And you think the Sonics would sell more tickets in Bellevue than Seattle ... LOL thanks for the entertaining rants.

Anonymous said...

As someone mentioned on a previous post, the Sonics management is very poor and were clearly lucky last year. This season is showing how effective Nate was as a coach. Losing AD was big, but clearly not the reason the team has dramatically declined. They still have their core players. As I see it there are 2 glowing problems.
A. These players don't respect Weiss. They might not have liked Nate's hard attitude, but they clearly respected him. They are jacking up 3's without playing with that fire or intensity on the defensive end.
B. Management - they didn't sign a veteran back up point guard. First, Luke has been awful this year on the defensive end of the floor. He's clearly getting getting beat off the drible which forces the bigs to help out on the penetration, which leads to lay up. 2nd, I find it extremly hard to believe the Vlade goes from 6th man a year candidate to only playing 20 minutes a night. I have a feeling Sund is behind this whole thing. Remember, Nate used to get frustrated with Sund because he kept telling him how to play his guys.

Anonymous said...

I don't understand how you can support bring back Ray Ray for 5 years and crazy bank, and then say that you can't bring back AD for a lot less and the same years. Granted Ray is a superstar, but he won't be in the last 3 years of his contract.

Myk said...

Yes can we please just lose the rest of our games so we can get a top five pick in what is being called one of the worst drafts of all time....that would be soooooooooooooooo helpful. Maybe one of you can go take a tire iron to Ray and break his ankle to guarantee this.

We should also clear a ton of salary cap space to sign all of those top tier FAs that will be available next year...wait there aren't any.

It really does hurt be called a moron by people who have no concept of logic and just like to bitch to bitch.

Biggie said...

Sund thinks he's a damn coach, I was appalled to hear that Sonics management was trying to tell Nate a certain style of play they wanted to see. Give him the clipboard and get the F*** out of his way, he's a Karl disciple he knows EXACTLY what he's doing and was on his way to becoming the greatest Sonics coach of all times. Blow this whole damn organization up, I would hopre that Davis Stern would see what is going on and force coffee boy to sell this team to someone who knows what they are doing, and to prove that they would start by immediatly firing Walker Weiss and Sund. Oh, and MYK I finally discovered what that stands for, Moronic Young Kid.

Biggie said...

Sorry, David Stern.

Myk said...

I am the moron and yet you are telling David Stern to fire Wally Walker who only owns part of the team...yup Im the dumb one

Biggie said...

I'm not tellin D. Stern to do a damn thing, I don't assume that he reads this blog, Moron. I'm making a suggestion, are you Wally's son or something? Don't answer or respond to my blogs anymore if we were in person I probably would have smacked the crap out of you by now, you have such ho tendencies I don't think I could control my pimp hand. LOL!!!!!!!!

Myk said...

Umm OK you said that firing Wally Walker was a start and I just felt it necessary to point out how stupid you are to think that it is even possible to fire Wally Walker...

Biggie said...

Nice tangent to go on. You friggin waste of space.

Diezel said...

Our Soft defense last night made Krstic look like freaking Shaq!!!! beside the 4th quarter once again Vlade looked like crap!! I mean 1 rebound that is absolutely unacceptable!! Luke shot better from outside, but is the guy has to go to the rack especially if Vince Carter is guarding him..3 free throws is a joke!!! when are the Soncis management going to realize Lukes not the answer.

Weiss last night in his post game interview with KC was saying how the team lack intensity or fire, isnt the coach's resposibility to do that??? I cant honestly see Weiss making through the season.

This homestand is HUGE, with Chicago, Sactown, Clevland, NY coming in we have to win these games period, no more excuses.

Diezel said...

Hey EJ....

What was up with that ringing endorsement by Randy towards Norv, I can pretty much guarantee that he wont be back next year.

Locke...
U ever gonna get a apple cup thread on here???

Anonymous said...

Locke has so many knobs to polish dude, he's really busy comin up with new "revolutionary" absolutly irrelevant stat breakdowns. and keepin Wally Walkers crack spit shined, the best line in the movie Snatch is one Locke should heed, it is when bricktop tells that dude "pull your tounge out of my arshole"

Biggie said...

LOL!!!

Anon, that was awesome. I went to Firewallywalker.com, great site.

Hey, MYK, what is your explaination for Magloire being obviosly available, and the sonics doing nothing, and why don't we have a servicable point guard?

Biggie said...

The Sonics could have a line-up right now of:

1. Earl watson
2. Larry hughes
3. Rashard Lewis
4. Jamaal Magloire
5. Johan Petro

We could have let ray bounce like the ball, and we could have some pretty damn good bench players too i.e. eddy curry etc.

Biggie said...

I don't know about you guys but I'll go to war with that team any day of the week.

Anonymous said...

Wow, that line-up gives me a chubby. LOL!!!!

David Locke said...

there is a bar in Magnolia called McGraws, it's a coug bar. Are husky fans out there gonna let that stand? The Space Needle is being painted crimson as I write this. I'm callin out you Husy fans, are you going to let this kind of stuff ride?

Sonic EJ said...

Diezel,

Moss loves Norv because Norv is a pass happy coach. Norv was and could still be a great offensive coordinator. However, I don't think he is a good enough Head Coach. He is OK but the Raiders as an organization don't screw around with non-salary cap positions. They hire the best available, regardless of price.

Moss is all about Moss. He doesn't want a new hot-shot defensive coordinator taking over and demanding that the Raiders sign Shaun Alexander (or just run Jordan more) there by limiting the number of plays for Moss.

If the Raiders do interview coaches for the job they need to ask one very important question. Will you consider starting Tui when Collins sucks for the first half of the year??? If they say yes they are better than what we have now.

Go Raiders!!!

Biggie said...

Ej,

Let it go man, the Raiders are NOT getting Alexander the great. NO WAY NO HOW. And I think you mean offensive co. but it's all good baby.

Myk said...

Black,

- So let me know the insider information that you have that the Sonics did nothing to get Magloire? Also, explain to me the trade that we could have done that got Curry. You must really have a source deep in the orgnatization that would give you all this information.

BTW there is no way we could have signed Earl Watson. He got the full mid-level for five years. Unfortunately, the Sonics after signing Damien did not have that much money to go. Funny but there is one guy on this board who said we should match his offer for sure....

You are great at spouting off things you "THINK" you know and yet you never come up with any logical proof to back things up.

I have met tons of people like you and it really suprises me that you were able to go to UW. Usually at UW you are required to support your arguments during tests and other assignments. Instead you are the kind of person who resorts to name calling and if we were in person you are probably the guy who resorts to talking all loud as if that makes your unsubstantiated point seem more true.

Biggie said...

was going to respond but what's the point? You are going to disagree with me no matter what I say so......

Anyways, I don't listen to Locke's show because he's a loud talker, so I'd be pretty hypocritical to do the same. Whether you think I went to the UW or not is pretty irrelevant don't you agree?

Myk said...

Neversaid I didn't believe you tha you went to UW, why would you lie about that? I am saying a man with a college education should be able support their arugments more than just throw out random often impossible scenarios.

How can you hold someone accountable for things that are not even possible?

How can you hold someone accountable for not trying something when you have no idea if they tried or not?

Diezel said...

EJ...If that in that interview with Collen Dominguez that was love for Norv, I would hate to see hate for the guy. If u missed the interview they are gonna replay it on Sunday Countdown.

I am so upset with this Sonic situation 20-20 is hindsight of course, but I think that EJ, Black and I were the only ones who seen this coming...When everybody was jonesing for Vlade to come back and labeling Luke the next Nash, we were begging the Sonics to go out and do something like trade Vlade and get a PG, obviously they didnt do either. The other thing that is a killer is the fact that we just picked up Lukes option so we have to pay this stiff two more years at the minumum..

The point guard matchup of the year Dickau vs. Luke tonight....Dickau got so schooled last night by Chauned it wasnt even funny...or we could look at who we could of had instead of Robert in Al Jefferson!!!!

Biggie said...

They didn't try to get Magloire if they did he would be wearing Green and Gold. It didn't take much for Milwaukee to get him so therefore I believe we had just as good of a shot. Why are you so in love with Sonic management anyways?? Did Wally Walker save your drowning kid or something??

Biggie said...

Dickau and Ridnour, great white hypes. Nate Robinson and Jamal Crawford (all 4 are from this state) are head and shoulders above both those idiots. This is going to be funny watching these two scrubs play against each other.

Anonymous said...

Two questions that will determine the Sonics' fate in the woeful (and winable)NBA Northwest:
Will Luke Ridnour ever play with any urgency on defense?
Will Vlade Radmanovic get enough change in his 10 cent head to match his million dollar body?
The Sonics' big guys need the guards and wings to put pressure on the ball. It is WAY too easy for opposing guards to make entry passes on the wings or into the post and lane or to penetrate or warp the defense on pick and rolls. Ridnour looks like a deer caught in headlights. He does not have the look of a starting NBA point guard. Vlade is just a bust. The Sonics should have bid him good bye in the off season and let him go frustrate another team. He'd better figure out that he has to be aggressive from the second he steps on the court--every time--or his big pay day will be for some team in Europe.
