BEYOND THE BOX SCORE - November 13

Boston 102 Houston 82 – I didn’t know that Raef LaFrentz could score 32 points …. Who is it on Houston that couldn’t stop LaFrentz. Think about that someone, either Juwan Howard, Stromile Swift or someone couldn’t stop LaFrentz …. LaFrentz did hit 7 three pointers … It may have been Howard who was a remarkable –27 in only 21 minutes … Houston had only 11 assists and shot just 38% …. Houston was a –21 when Derek Anderson was on the floor and he only played 17 minutes ….. Boston opened this game on a 28-12 run. Houston was never in it.

Cleveland 108 Orlando 100
– Larry Hughes finally has his bust out game for the Cavs. 22-9-7 and 4 steals …. Is it a surprise this happens when being guarded by Steve Francis? …. Cleveland closed the game with Donyell Marshall instead of Drew Gooden. Marshall hit a 3 at the end of regulation to put the game into overtime… Cleveland is 5-2 and they rank #4 in the NBA in efficiency ranking. They might be for real.

Philadelphia 113 Clippers 108 – How does this team ever win with Chris Weber. He took 17 shots and scored only 13 points. He know has 23 points in his last 30 shot attempts. Has their ever been a worse 20-9 player in the NBA? ….. Philly has won 4 in a row … Sam Cassell is having the ultimate 35 year old season. One night he has it and the next his legs don’t come to the arena. Tonight he was 1 for 10 …. Elton Brand had a another huge game 32-11 on 10 of 16 shooting …. I am really surprised that Chris Kaman is not developing into a player … Lee Nalion was +14 for Philly …. Quiten Ross is starting in place of Maggette and has a better +/- almost every night …. Chris Wilcox kills the Clippers every time he comes on the floor.

Denver 102 Minnesota 91
– Coach Karl over Coach Casey … Marko Jaric’s minutes are slowly diminishing for Minnesota …. Voshon Lenard is out of the starting line-up for Denver and DeMarr Johnson is in. Johnson had 17 points and 12 rebounds and was +20 in 32 minutes ….. Is this a good night? Wally world had 20 points in 27 minutes but in those 27 minutes Minnesota was outscored by 14 …… Denver is 3-4 and Minnesota is 3-3 who is going to win the Northwest?

New York 105 Sacramento 95 – Sacramento is about as bad as Seattle to start the season. Kings fans were blaming a brutal schedule. How do they explain this? …. Nate Robinson only played 9 minutes but the Knicks were +9 when he was on the floor …. Chaning Frye had a great night he was +21 in 19 minutes and had 19 points and 6 rebounds. Kenny Thomas, notoriously one of the worst defenders in the NBA was in the game for Sacramento against Frye … Thomas was –23 in 12 minutes …. Coach killer Bonzi Wells was –13 in 29 minutes .. The Kings never lead.

Hey Locke,

I know that you haven't been getting too many comments on these "Beyond the Box Score" posts, but I want to say that I appreciate them and love reading them each night - you bring a unique perspective and good statistical analysis to the league.

One thing I have to say as a ray of hope to Sonics fans is that the team is only one game out of the division lead and we have had a realatively tough schedule. After Washington beath SA by 20 the 47 point loss doesn't look absolutely horrible...just horrible

Anyone interested in Steve Francis? I don't know how I feel about him, but he is one of the few All-Star talent players that might actually be available

Diezel said...

I could live with a stevie franchise for Luke trade straight up if Orlando wants to do it..or even better how about Kelvin Kato and Franchise for Luke and Vlade??? I'll take that trade in a minute.

Biggie said...

I don't know where you guys come from, but on this planet in the NBA they don't trade stud for scrub straight up. Francis being the stud Ridnour being the scrub. Maybe they would do it for Luke and Rashard, but think about it if Orlando traded Francis for Ridnour and Lewis, Ridnour wouldn't even start he would be Jameer Nelsons' back up. The Sonics should have been smart and drafted Nelson when they had the chance. If Orlando did that trade straight up they would be the stupidest organization in basketball. Would you give up A player like Franchise for a scrub like Ridnour??? Who would??

Myk said...

I agree that a Luke for Francis trade would not work. Both from a talent stand point and a salary standpoint. However, I also know that they are not very happy with Francis in Orlando (and he is not happy their either). So would a Vlade, Fortson and first rounder work for them?

Like I said I am not even sure I would really want Francis. He puts up good numbers but has never won on a consistent level and seems like a bit of a malcontent. Talk about about powerful backcour/SF combo though..

MYK,

NO WAY!!!!!!!!

WE ARE NOT GOING TO GIVE UP OUR FIRST TOP-5 DRAFT PICK SINCE GARY PAYTON FOR STEVE "I PLAY NO D" FRANCIS.

Sorry, I'm just going to freak the F out if we trade this pick.

I really do like the idea of trading Luke. I can't see Luke as the point guard of the next Sonics team to win a title.

What about Toronto??? Would Ray Allen get us Chris Bosh? I know what you are thinking "we can't trade Ray; he is what makes us good." Can this team really get any worse? Throw in Jalen Rose and maybe Luke so the money would work. I don't know...I just want a big guy like Bosh, even if he is unproven.

Myk said...

EJ,

- Who would our top 5 pick get this year? It is my understanding that this is a pretty weak draft. Also, as bad as the Sonics have been I don't believe they are going to have one of the five worst records in the NBA. As I said in an earlier post we have lost to all pretty good to very good teams.

- I guess with Toronto you never know but I would highly doubt a team would trade away their number 4 pick in the draft who is a pretty good big man. It is basically impossible to trade for a big player in the NBA, unless his name is Chris Webber. The only reason I even brough up Francis is that he is probably the only superstart type player that is out there to be traded for.

Anyone else excited like me to watch one of the greatest games in UW history tonight? 2002 Apple Cup...I am sure all the Cougar fans will watch and just pray that Mike Price won't be an idiot again and have his QB throwing the ball in the fourth quarter..

Anonymous said...

Raef Lafrentz did score 32 twice before and over 20 about 50 times in his career so he is capable when healthy and on.

Biggie said...

You mean Bill Doba????

Myk said...

Black,

No Mike Price...aren't they showing the Apple Cup where UW was 5-5 and beat the 10-1 Cougars in triple OT? That was the game where Nate made the big INT because Mike Price is an idiot..

Diezel said...

That was one of the biggest Apple cups of all time....the Nate int on Mike Bush....Reggie LIGHTING up Marcus Trufant, Jason Gessers Stupidity and Tank Jonhsons great play, that was also the game that sealed the Northwest Championship as well!!!! also the fact that after the game Reggie was talking madd ish to loser coug fans...

The only PG's in this summers draft that I would want to take over for Luke are Rondo from UK, Daniel Gibson from Texas, Sergio Rodriguez or G-Mac from da cuse', or we could go Lemarcus Allrige or Adam Morrison.

Lets do this....give Orlando Luke, Flip and Vlade for Kelvin Cato, Deshawn Stevenson, and Steve Francis?? or how about Starbury, Mo Taylor, and Trevor Arizia for Luke, Reggie and either Vlade/Flip??? I think honestly Isiah would go for that one considering some of the awful trades he's made so far.

Did anyone laugh out loud like me when they read that article on how Nate Punked J.J in Practice, now thats funny....too bad JJ is not gonna be seeing much more PT this year as he has slipped to there 3rd string Center.

Lance Uppercut said...

This year is going to be a real classic Apple Cup. Both Washington teams fighting over who gets the distinction of worst team in the Pac-10. Who will blink first?

Biggie said...

I know that this is off topic but can I get a "hey black, you were right about Stanback" from everyone except Diezel (who already congratulated instead of hated)??? GO HUSKIES, Bring on those MickeyFickey Cougs. Apple Cup '05 is ours baby WOOF!!!!

Biggie said...

Diezel,

Bro' go to the doctor i think somebody laced your stash baby. I know you don't want to bring Luke Ridnour II in here (G-Mac). If you are serious I will never talk hoop with you again, that kid is soooooo trash. No not just because he's white but because all he can do is hit an occasional 3 and because he is straight up trash. You can't be serious right? say it ain't so. Melo and H. Warrick made him look real good but he is TRASH. Trust me.

Diezel said...

U know Ive been with Isiah all year...Ride or Die as I say, and that 75yrd throw, I think anyone who questions Isiahs arm strength is crazy.... I can see Isiah at the next level in the mold of Heinz Ward a college QB who became a great NFL reciever and the most physical. BTW what time is that Apple Cup replay??? The only two Apple cups I cant stand to watch are the 92 cup in the Snow at Pullman and the 96 cup when they caried that Fat Loser Ryan Leaf off the Field at Husky stadium that is one of the worse memories in the history of U Dub football.

Biggie said...

I can see Izzi at the NFL level as a QB with one helluva cannon, get him a real good QB coach and the sky is the limit. Switching QB's to other positions really doesn't usually work sometimes sure but not many, you can only think of like 3 or 4 successful examples while you can think of like 10 that went real bad.

Diezel said...

Black...Very true but would u rather see Isiah playing the Ward/Randel El role or the Adrian Mcpherson/David Gerrard mold a guy with a cannon but no PT??? Hey EJ...looks like Tui might be gettin a look this year, my boy in the Bay Area is telling me that guys like JT the Brick are putting the major heat wave on Norv to bench that alchi Collins!!!!

Diezel said...

I forgot.....whats the pulse as far as how long Weiss will make it?? do people think he'll make it longer than Westphal?? the thing that is so familar is this a experienced NBA coach coming into replace a legend Paul with George and Bob with Nate, both guys Clashing with top players Paul with GP and Bob with Vlade, and both had Sonic legends in the wings waiting for a shot Paul with Nate and now Bob with Jack Sikma...

I can see that moron Wally hiring Jack Sikma in a few weeks or at the latest by the All-Star break, he's Wally's pet!!!!!

Locke,

I love your analysis. It's always on point.
Just one thing: it's spelled W-E-B-B-E-R. You always make a point to mention how inefficient it is. I think the least you could do is spell the guy's name right...
Thanks

NateRob1 said...

Trade Luke for Nate Robinson!!!!!!

Myk said...

Hmmm I would have to say taht the reason UW won this week was because they dominated the ground game and I will be the first to admit that Isaiah helped with his feet. But other than his lucky 69yard TD pass he still looked horrible as a passer. He probably would be better served to switch to WR if he wanted to make it into the NFL...not many QBs with 2-15 career records are NFL QBs

Also, the 2002 game is tonight at 7 (already started) and the 92 game is on Thursday at 730. I was kind of hoping they would show the 2003 game too. Or it would sure be nice to see Tui's last game there when they won 50-3 or whatever...I was at that game and it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life it was I think 8 degrees during the game...

Biggie said...

I just want to know, has there ever been a worse 12th pick than robert swift? Diezel and Anon you guys are the stat geeks (no offense) can I get a short list of the dudes we could have gotten with that pick who are doing quite well right now. I just want more fuel to pour on W.W.before i throw on the match.

Myk said...

Are you kidding? Sure Robert Swift may not be that great right now, but at least he is only 19. There have been tons of picks that were even higher that 12 that were worse than the pick of Swift. Darko Milcic, anyone?

Biggie said...

Dude, you are such a moron. LOL!!!

for real though I would take 1/2 a Darko Milicic over 1 robert swift. That question was rhetorical dufus, I know that there has never been a worse pick. answer me this smart guy has there been an NBA team with a worse history of scrubs than seattle i.e. - McIlvaine, Swift, Ridnour, Baker, Mclean, etc. ??
I love my team, I just hate the people in charge.

Biggie said...

Instead of ridnor we could have had either of the dudes from St. Joe's - Jameer Nelson, or Delonte West. Both are better both are studs, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sonic EJ said...

myk,

Yah, maybe Swift can become the next great white hope...in like 1,000 years!!!
If you think Swift was a good pick then you have problems.

They guy I wanted was Al Jefferson. He is only 19 or 20 and is (keyword here) is producing right now. Maybe our grandchildren will really enjoy watching Swift as he slowly gets better. I just can't stand waiting that long for a lottery pick to start to maybe doing something.

Next time the Sonics draft a HS Center with no talent; can they make him come in for a workout first??? Then they can see he has no skills and draft someone else. That would be great...thanks Sonics.

Locked on Sports said...

For everyone who wanted Al Jefferson. Where would he play and who would he play in front of?

Biggie said...

C'mon LOS are you sticking up for the Swift pick?? Ya know I might actually have some respect for you if you could at least admit that the Sonics made one of the biggest flubs in the history of the NBA draft, with that stupid pick.

Biggie said...

We took swift on a recomendation from Portland, they saw him and said "oh yeah, he's awesome you guys should definatly take him" and then when they hung up the phone they said "man, that Wally Walker, what a jackass". Do you think that the Seahawks would take a player we had never seen, but the friggin Rams thought he was great?? If Seattle had the 12th pick and Portland had the 13th and two of the prospects were Lebron James or Robert Swift, Portland would say "man that James kid is a real slacker, you guys definatly shouldn't take him, now that Swift kid, WOW that's who you should take, but we sure hope you don't so that we can have him 'snicker'.
Wally Walker is a bigger moron than Myk.

Sonic EJ said...

Locke,

If you don’t think the Sonics could use Al Jefferson instead of Swift then I just lost respect for you as a "NBA guy."

We could have let Reggie walk and we could just benched Danny for good. Vlade is a 3 and shouldn't affect the thought process at 4.

Nick and Al would split time at the 4. They could even play together for stretches.

IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO FIGURE OUT!!!!!!!!!!

Biggie said...

Yo Diezel,

Did you see Trufant get used like a tampon by Holt in that game sunday? That was pathetic, Locke could have broken up that touchdown, all that needeD to be done was to PUT YOUR FRIGGIN HAND UP MARCUS!!!!!!!!!!! I'll bet Reggie saw that highlight and fell of his couch laughing at Trufant, he probably called Holt early in the week and told him that you can get away with sandlot plays against that moron.

Myk said...

Black,

- I am not saying that Swift was a good pick (although I would wait until he is in his 20s to actually give up on him..). I am saying that there is no way you could say that Swift is the worst draft pick ever..or even ONE of the worst draft picks ever when I could come up with 50 guys that did just as much as Swift has done and were drafted even higher.

- And yes I could name teams that have had a worse history of scrubs than those guys. The Sonics have only missed the playoffs what 4 times in the last 20 years? Go ask Clipper and Hawks fans what it is like to watch scrubs play

Diezel said...

Watching the 02 Apple cup last night got my juices going.... how great was Tank Johnson and Kai Ellis in that game, too bad Hapoi has regressed and not progressed and doesnt it seem the Bennimen and Derting are like 30??? It also brought back how much I hate that So cal wannabe Jason Gesser..and Mike Bush, and it gets u thinking how good Nate could have been if he played football full time??

Are they playing the 92 or 93 Apple Cup?? the 92 was the year in the snow I think the year of the Bomb Threat I think?? Bledsoe and Darren Pointer killed us as well as Singer Mobley.

Im glad they are not showing the 96 cup cuz I puke everytime I see the picture of fans carrying that Fat Arsss Ryan Leaf off the field in Husky Stadium.

Myk said...

Diezel,

- 92 Apple Cup "Snow Bowl"

- It was amazing to watch the game because I remember in 2002 thinking that the team was only average but now you watch them and compare it to what we have now and they look like national champions.

- You really think that Hopoi has regressed? Didn't he lead the Pac-10 in TFL last year? I just think he has nothing around him so he gets doubled and tripled.

Myk said...

I was watching the 2002 Apple Cup on my Tivo and the play where Pickett supposedly threw the ball twice in one play to get a TD was a BS call...when you slow it down (thanks Tivo) it is obvious that the ball was out of his hand as he was cocking his arm back. Guess that counters all the claims by WSU fans who say the Kai Ellis fumble recovery was BS
