SI.com - Writers - Basketball's new math (cont.) - Friday October 21, 2005 12:51PM

We have been doing this for four years on Locked on Sports and now they are writing about it in SI. The stats revolution is upon us.

SI.com - Writers - Basketball's new math (cont.) - Friday October 21, 2005 12:51PM: "Not until recently, however, did a community analogous to baseball's SABR evolve, when the Association for Professional Basketball Research was founded in 1997. Today, the APBRmetricians -- who are clearly better with numbers than acronyms -- tend to agree on certain truths. For example, a team's efficiency is best measured per possession, not per game (a running team may rack up points but still be an inefficient offensive team), and the one inscrutable player stat is how a team fares when someone is on the court versus when he is off it, because this ties back to point differential. And point differential, obviously, is the end goal."

I love all these magazines and their predictions. ESPN.com has the Sonics not being a playoff team and yet when you look at their lineup rating it is higher than almost every team in the West including the Denver team that has NO shooters.

I thought the SI article was very interesting. (It was the first one I read when I got my new issue in the mail.) However it scares me if the Sonics think they can rely mostly on stats for player evaluation. Basketball is, more than other sports, a sport of stars. Stars win the big games, stars win the Championships and more importantly stars sell tickets.

I understand teams can’t be all star players and role players are important to winning. AD is an example of a ‘Moneyball’ player that worked out. I just hope this Sonics Management team doesn’t throw common sense out the window in their quest to prove their genius.

Locke,

I know that this is off the subject that you're on right now but it is relevant to past dialogue.

It looks like Magloire was available after all he was just traded to milwaukee for desmond mason, that means we could have gotten him if Sonics managment would have removed their heads from you know where. We need a dude like that, maybe we could have suckered them into taking Rad and R. Swift off of our hands. They (sonics managment) blow it WTF???

Yeah Locke I mean since Magloire was traded that means that really they were just looking for anyone so why didn't we trade for him.

I mean all of us fans know that the Sonics never called them, and we know that a sign and trade with Vlade would have been much more complicated, and we know that Desmond Mason is probably better (or at least more of a known quality) than Vlade at this point.

I love how we just KNOW what the Sonics do and don't do based on trades. Personally, I find it interesting that the Hornest traded for Mason, and wonder if it had anything to do with him being an Oklahoma State star and the fact that that is where they are playing all year (and hoping to sell tickets..).

Would have been nice to get him though. Sounds like Petro might be better than some people thought...

Petro is better in 1 month of training camp than Swift with a year of NBA life under his belt. Why??? LOL!!!! Fisher DeBerry knows. LOL!!!!!
