SIMULBLOG OF SONICS V. CLIPPERS

I am will keep an running "SIMULBLOG" going during the game tonight.

CLIPPERS 101 SONICS 93
Obviously a very disapointing end to the season opener.
Sam Cassell dominated the 4th quarter with 3 3 pointers.
Cassell at 35 years old in his 38th minute of work on the floor from 3 is a shot I can live with but tonight he was read hot.
Flip Murray was Bob Weiss choice to try to stop Cassell and it didn't work. If Murray is the defensive stopper for this team it is a problem.
Turnovers were a huge issue tonight. Last season the Sonics turned the ball over 13% of their possessions last night they turned it over 20% of the possessions. That is the difference in the game.
Defensive rebounding was awful. The Clippers got 41% of the potential offensive rebounds in the 2nd half and 38% for the game. That number should never be higher then 30%.
With their poor rebounding and poor turnovers the Sonics gave away possessions.
Offensively, the Sups had some terrible possessions down the stretch, most notably was Flip dribbling into to traffic and turning it over when it was a one point game.

Sonics 75 Clippers 64 at the end of 3 Quarters
The bench has arrived. 11-1 run with the bench on the floor. The substitutions in the second half have made a lot more sense then what we say in the first half. Radmanovic was the first off the bench, followed by Collison, Murray and Wilkins.
The area where you notice AD being gone is the wrong guys are making decisions with the basketball. Ray Allen and Vlady both just committed turnovers where they forced passes that didn’t need to be made.
Defensively I felt the Sonics were playing well most of the night and we are beginning to see the dividends as the Clippers are missing shots.
Flip played very well in this stint.

Sonics 64 Clippers 57 with 3:50 left in the 3rd Quarter.
Ray Allen’s leadership is terrific. He just went out of his way to get Petro a play on a pick and roll to reward him for his effort and to allow him to gain confidence.
Reggie Evans just kills floor spacing. Evans would be a much better player if he understood his own inadequacies.

Sonics 50 Clippers 50 at the Half.

The Sonics defense doesn’t seem to be terrible but the Clippers are cutting through the lane and having a very successful offensive game with mid-range jumpers. At the half the Clippers have not made a 3 but are hitting 57% of their shots in the game.
The Sonics offense is close, but seems slightly off of its game. That may be as simple as the combinations on the floor.

Sonics 41 Clippers 36 with 3:58 left in the 2nd Quarter.
Bob Weiss’s substitution patterns aren’t smooth yet. Radmanovic didn’t play in the first quarter.
Vlady Radmanovic doesn’t look comfortable on the floor. He actually looks like he is lacking energy. He had a very lethargic pre-season.
The Clippers post players might be the worst passers I have seen in the NBA. Their front court is the turnover waiting to happen.
At times the Sonics offense seems to be lacking the movement it needs to have.
Last season the Sonics were #22 in forcing turnovers. Tonight the Clippers are throwing it all over the place. It is hard to tell how much is improved Sonics defense and how much is Clippers sloppy play.
As nice as Reggie’s post play early was he now has committed turnovers or missed badly the last three times he has gone to the basket.

Sonics 27 Clippers 26 end of 1st Quarter
Clippers got back in the game behind Sam Cassell. Cassell got 2 buckets on Luke Ridnour and then added two more on Flip Murray.
The Clippers closed the quarter scoring on 8 straight possessions.
The Clippers are running a high pick and roll with Cassell and Brand and the Sonics don’t have the answer

Sonics 16 Clippers 4 6:43 left 1st Quarter
Who would have thought the first bucket of the season would be scored by Johan Petro.
10 of the 12 Sonics first points came from Reggie Evans and Johan Petro.
Sonics open the game scoring on 8 of their first 11 possessions and 7 straight into the time-out.
Petro was terrific.

Storylines: Petro at center
Do the Sonics run more
Are the Clippers the most improved team in the West.

Inactive list:
Sonics -- Vitaly, Mateen and Swift.
Clippers -- Corey Maggette, Shawn Livingston, Walter McCarty.

Petro looks great!

brett said...

he sure did. even hit the free throws.

brett said...

no turnovers in the first half for the sonics? that is great.

Sonic EJ said...

Put Petro back in the game!!!

Sonic EJ said...

This Sonics defense is paper thin.

brett said...

at least they look active. that last flurry was nice.

brett said...

locke,
obviously, as soon as Vlady gets some "shots" he will be less lethargic. I do think he should be playing in the first quarter.

Sonic EJ said...

If Vlade is not going to bring his 'A Game' he needs to stay on the bench.

Sonic EJ said...

Petro has to get more than the 5-6 minutes he got in the first half.

Bob needs to realize that he can't play everone as many minutes as they want. Play the players that are producing.

brett said...

agreed. i think it is going to take him (bob)some time to work within the flow of the game. It looks like he decided Petro would start, play six minutes, and sit the rest of the half.

NateRob1 said...

Jerome James stats game 1:

4 fouls 8 minutes 2 points

Good Riddance!!!!

Sonic EJ said...

The bench has really looked a lot better in the 3rd quarter.

NateRob1 said...

Supes have been disrespected from all the experts. They are picked to be topped by the Nuggets. Why?
You tell me!!!

They will be better than last year if Petro keeps playing the way he has and Vlade starts picking it up.The bench is very deep and look at the way Damien Wilkins plays. Flip needs to look out if he doesn't play better than Damien.

brett said...

i would love to see flip pushed back in the rotation. wilkins does look pretty good tonight.

Sonic EJ said...

Will someone please grab a rebound? Put Petro and Evans back in the game!

Sonic EJ said...

Flip looks like a 2 trying to play point. He seems to be having a tough time running the offense. He needs to improve his timing when delivering the ball to a shooter.

brett said...

i liked that hard foul by nick. that was one of the things i loved last year. good hard fouls around the basket to make teams think about taking it inside.

brett said...

Are they going to meet at center court when the game ends?

brett said...

flip is out of control these last few minutes

Sonic EJ said...

Bob needs to get control of his team now!!!!!!!!!!

What the hell kind of lineup is trying to finish with? This is not working. Get Flip off the floor. This is crap, I'm pissed!

Dids said...

Flip is killing us. Dribble, dribble, dribble, all while not looking for anyting but his shot.

Sonic EJ said...

Bob looks like a rookie coach tonight. (sigh)

Sonic EJ said...

That is his version of point guard.

Sonic EJ said...

I think I'm going to throw up. This has been one of the worst coaching jobs I have seen. The Clippers shouldn't even be close.

NateRob1 said...

These aren't your grandmother's Clippers. This is better with Mobley, Cassell, and the two rookies. Do you think we could have used A.D. tonight? Damien should be playing ahead of Flip and we should get Alex Scales back. Danny better figure out that his act is getting old and the officials aren't going to let him get away with it like he did last year against Sacramento. I hope that they push him back to the end of the bench along with Flip. They can't make crucial turnovers during the game especially when you have an assasin named Cassell on the other side. Ray and Rashard can't carry this team on their backs the whole season. Vlade needs to find his shooting touch and not worry about becoming a power forward anymore because he is not that. The bad news is we lost, the good news is that we lost to these Clips just like last year and we ended up winning 52. It's a long season folks so don't start jumping off the Aurora bridge any time soon.

No idea why Petro didn't get any minutes in the 4th qtr. Seems like there's more energy when he's out on the floor.

No ball movement whatsoever when Murray is in the game. The ball doesn't seem to be moving as much as last year. Evans need to stop trying to be an offensive force. Vlady needs to stop shooting the ball just so he can get his numbers. What was up with the rotation in the 1st half?

At times the team played out of control. I hope the struggles is really due to the fact that Weiss needs to figure out his personnel.

NateRob1 said...

Flip shouldn't be Luke's backup and shouldn't be guarding a deadly shooter like Cassell. I thought that D. Wilk should have been there to play the D. Flip was holding the rock too much and when he did the offense was stagnant and he turned it over. Where was Brunson? Isn't he the backup top Luke? No way whould Flip be a point.

Nice Site! Good Work ;)

Sonic EJ said...

What a bad team.

Who put this thing together?

Sonics management should be fired.

The Clippers didn't even have their 2nd best player.

What a bad game.

Vlade sucks, coach Bob sucks, Flip sucks...the whold team should be blown up.

Myk said...

EJ,

Get away from the ledge...slowly...slowly...I agree that it is pretty bad that they lost. Seems like they have some spark or else they wouldnt have been up by 15 about 3 or 4 times and/or led the entire game until the fourth quarter.

It seems like they went to more run and gun then trying to either score in the early offense or at the end of the possessions like last year. Too much dribbling (especially by the wrong people) and definately not enough passing.

Biggie said...

It's Paul Westphal all over again, Weiss doesn't know who, when or where to sub. I know it's just one game but that was garbage.

Biggie said...

If we had Nate or even coach Casey, we would have won by 20. Why the F*@# did we let coach Casey leave??? Watch him get coach of the year this year, screw portland minnesota will own us this year, mark my words.

Myk said...

Black..

It is really easy to explain why we "let" Coach Casey leave. He wanted to be a head coach and at the time he left Nate was still using the Sonics to raise his price with the Blazers.

Biggie said...

Myk,

Don't answer my posts.

Whoever cut Radmanovic's hair needs to be shot. WTF was that???

Biggie said...

Oh yeah, Radmanovic SUCKS, flip was pretty bad too.

Myk said...

I find it really ammusing how EVERYONE in the media rips on Jerome James, and then when they talk about the Sonics they say that we will be affected by the loss of what Jerome James gave us each night. Do they even read their stuff for consistency?

What happened last night AD?

Myk said...

Black,

No problem just thought you would like to know...

Mike B said...

I'm not to worried about this performance just yet. It's the first game and if you remember last year they got BLASTED in the opener. I agree with Locke, Evans CRUSHES the spacing on teh floor. I didn't think Murray looked that bad, but he has to improve his defense. I think the loss was just one of those nights where an NBA player got really hot (Cassell) and won the game for them. Ray has done this to many a team.

Myk said...

mike b,

I agree to a lesser extent..I mean the Sonics led the entire game until the 4th quarter and had double digit leads a few time. Petro looked pretty good for a 19 year old so there are some positives out there.

Sonic EJ said...

Petro is the one positive.

Sonic EJ said...

I'M SOOOOOOOOOO F’N PISSED!!!

It is that bad myk, try not to be so positive. You are killing me man.

I thought Wally's and Rick's reasoning for keeping Bob as the coach was that he had head coaching experience and the transition would be somewhat seamless. Well what the hell happend?

Lance Uppercut said...

Nice line Fortson, you fat sh!t! You can't make fun of Jerome James and not take shots at Fortson. What a POS!

Myk said...

EJ,

I have said since day one that the Weiss hiring was the biggest mistake they made all summer.

I guess I am not pissed because I expected this, last year was a best case scenario, just like the year before was a worst case scenario so I picture them landing somewhere in the middle.

There is no viable excuse to let Casey go when Nate wasn't signed. If you look back in history and re-read Nate's comments about Sund (who would tell Nate how to coach) his move to Portland was not surprising at all. Totally inexusable and I blame Sund. He should never tell the coach what style they should play. If they want to play like the Dallas of old, these types of performances will continue to happen.

I hate to be this critical after 1 game, but Weiss was completley outcoached tonight. What was up with his substituion patterns and why didn't they put Wilkins (great defender) on Cassell.

In the end, what do you expect when management only pays their coach 2 million bucks. That's a joke in this day of age.

Sonic EJ said...

And I'm pissed because I did expect this and it is happening. Everyone else in the west got better and we got slightly worse.

Why didn't we go after Earl Watson? Would he not be the perfect guy to guard Sam in the 4th quarter?

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Myk said...

There was no viable excuse to let Casey go? Yeah I am sure that EVERYONE in Seattle would have been happy to know that the Sonics fired Nate.

Fired Nate you say???

Well yes they would have had to fire Nate because at the time Casey took his job, Nate was still under contract as our coach giving no signs either way of what he would do. I think all of you would have been 100xs more mad if they had not given Nate all the chances in the world to come back, you would have called the front office heartless for just dumping "Mr. Sonic". You guys can't have it both ways.

What they should have done is sing Flip Saunders

Myk said...

EJ,

I agree with you that Earl Watson would have been a nice addition but I think that he had some bad blood from his first days here in Seattle. Plus I think that Denver promised him he would be a starter after they traded Nene and Andre Miller for a shooter...talk about a move that blew up in their face.

Also, what teams in the West improved over the summer? Dallas lost one of their leaders, Phoenix is definately not improved, Denver did not improve (and are now less with Nene). I can't think of one team in the West besides the Spurs (and maybe the Rockets with Swift) that signed a superstar Free Agent.

Well there was one team that did but you guys don't want to count the Sonics...

Anonymous said...

Hire Flip, are you kidding me? That tells us all how ignorant you are. Do you forget how much $$$ they were willing to pay a coach??? Flip earned twice as much.

If you are in tune with you're team and Nate didn't sign the contract right away - you knew there was problems. It's called spin control. Losing your top 2 coaches in one offseason is an embarrasement and slap in the face.

Myk said...

That is just crap there is noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo way the fans of Seattle would have accepted the Sonics looking like they were choosing Casey over McMillan.

As for Flip, there is no salary cap on the the coaches so that is one place you can blame the Sonics for not spending money.

Sonic EJ said...

You both have valid points about Casey and Nate.

Too bad Denver is in our division because I don’t think Watson has played one whole minute in their fist 2 games. Watson will be traded.

I think SAC, HOU, SA, MIN, POR, GS, LAL, DEN and even the Clips got better this year.

Biggie said...

Flip Saunders is a clown who couldn't get his team out of the first round of the playoffs like 5 yrs in a row and he had KG!!!!!

But, he his head and shoulders above bob 'dumbass' weiss.

Biggie said...

did you guys see Bonzi go nuts, that was awesome I've benn a Bonzi fan since back in the days.

Sonic EJ said...

Flip is a clown! I would have like to give a young guy a shot. Maybe the guy from the Suns.

Anonymous said...

I blame the Sonics management for multiple problems and not spending money is the #1. If we are trying to win a championship and supposedly close with our current personnel, why didn't we bring anyone in besides Brunson to fill the holes that AD left us. Trying to operate a team with 50 owners will not work..If there are so concerned with money, why not sell the team to Balmer (who's already put a req into purchasing the team)? Schultz was in Europe on vacation when this all went down - enough said.

Sonic EJ said...

Yeh, he played well. I've never been sold on Bonzi. I read an article in Slam a couple of years back that made me think he was just kink of a thug. He sure can light it up when he gets going though.

How about Antione Walker and Eddie Curry? Where are all the haters now?

Sonic EJ said...

If Balmer bought the team I would cry tears of joy.

Myk said...

Yes I would love for the Balmer to buy the Sonics it would be great. Maybe the NBA would make an exception just for him that he didn't have to play under the contraints of the salary cap. Then we could all be happy and the Sonics could buy every free agent out there.

Anonymous said...

who the hell i8s this Balmer guy you guys are talking about??

Biggie said...

Oh yeah don't get me wrong Bonzi is a thug but he's got game (kinda streaky sometimes).

I've got a bone to pick with Rashard, and that is: REBOUND FOOL!!!!! WTF, as Ej brought up the other day Mr. Marion in Phoenix had a bad game offensivly, but managed to pull his head out of his butt and go get 16 boards. Rashard is taller and IMHO more athletic (he moves like a stiff sometimes though) why don't we ever see the same type of effort from him?? 16 boards is probably Rashards career high.
Petro looks damn good though, Weiss should have played him in the 4th quarter, the whole damn forth quarter if you ask me, Fortsons act is really gettin old.

The warriors are going to be damn good this year, if B. Davis can stay healty. Milwaukee too.

I HATE BOB WEISS

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH THE WESTPHAL ERA EVER AGAIN, THAT SUCKED MORE THAN ANYTHING. PLEASE FIRE WEISS, AND DON'T REPLACE HIM WITH SIKMA PLEASE.

If we play like we did last night all season, we won't win 30 games.

Anonymous said...

My biggest complaints:

1. Fortson's immaturity
2. Vladimir didn't look ready to play
3. Flip's play in the fourth quarter
4. Ridnour's still scared to shoot
5. The 3 guard lineup in the fourth quarter
6. Lack of fluidity on the offensive side of the ball, they looked like they were running a brand new system.
7. Bob Weiss, appeared he didn't know what subsitutions he wanted to make.
8. Evans poor decisions with the ball, trying to be aggesive when he shouldn't be.

I think the team will be fine, the talent is still there. But, they just looked like amateurs out there, I don't recall that kind've disorganization on offense the entire season last year. They still would've won the game if Cassell didn't have a career night. I'm not going to declare anything yet, but I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Myk said...

Yes there was nothing more annoying to me last year than seeing Reggie, Danny or Jerome run and either set a completely moving pick or knock a guy over and then act like "who me??". It is amazing how a grown human being can be so oblivious to how he acts..

TheRobbSays said...

I was at the game. I couldnt believe everything fell apart. We also lost a 12 point lead in the 1st.

Flip was lost out there, and it isnt so much that he was doing bad, its that he wasnt doing anything to help contribute. We needed defensive stops and baskets, and he didnt provide either. I believe Wilkens should have been out there. With Flip on the court, it made the loss of Daniels look real bad.

is Radman trying to make the mullet look part of the new NBA dress code? He should go back to the cornrows because it is still in style! LOLOLOLOLOLO!!!!!!!!

Biggie said...

That wasn't a mullet that was some ratty ass uneven on top with a freakin rat tail (hello 6th grade) in the back. WTF????

Baub Weisstphal shall be his new name.

Sonic EJ said...

I knew it...it was a rat tail!

WTF is up with Radman? Is his agent also his barber???
LOL

Holy crap, that is a bad hair cut!
LOL

NateRob1 said...

Based on all these comments i am never going to watch the Sonics again!!!!ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

NateRob1 said...

I think Rad was trying to make a point to management about giving him more money so that he can afford to go to a REAL hairstylist not HairMasters!!!!!

Diezel said...

All summer long I was saying the Sonics needed a backup PG to spell Lukes horrible defense and what happpens the first game....he gets torched by Sam I am...cmmon man!!! that defense was flat out horrible!! but I am not ready to give up on the season by any means.

Can we all agree that Flip is not a PG, I cant figure out still what Walker and Sund were doing, U see Chris Duhons first game anybody??? yeah a triple double, and Earl Watson cant even sniff any playing time in Denver, we could totally use him. Tonights game will be interesting to see Dwayne vs. Bob, to see who we should of really hired, especially since Seattle knew they didn't want Nate back.
