The Sonics were hot after Dale Davis for the past weeks and really thought he would be a nice fit to the team. However, the Pistons blew the Sonics out of the water with a 2 year 7 million dollar contract for Davis.
The Sonics were believed to more in the 2 year 4 to 5 million range. If the Sonics had matched the Davis contract they would have been unable to match Damien Wilkins if they decide that is the best approach.
Moreover, 7 million over 2 years for a seriously aging Davis is another head scratching deal in the NBA this off-season. Hard to complain that the Sonics wouldn’t eliminate any chance of retaining Wilkins by matching the deal that Davis got offered from Detroit.

Any information on some of the other FAs that the Sonics are looking at? Maybe they just plan to resign their own FAs at this point?
They seem to be looking for defensive centers who are strong rebounders and don't take lots of shots.
The idea would be to have them go one-on-one for offensive rebounds with the opposing center in the lineup where Vlade plays the 4. You bring the opposing 4 out of rebounding range and give us a mismatch. The problem for guys like Fortson and Evans playing the 5 is they can get pounded on the defensive end by opposing centers.
That's why they wanted Davis - guy plays tough defense against centers and is a great rebounder. Booth is a weak rebounder so won't work well in that offense.

Problem with Booth is that he goes after everything - which makes him a pretty poor defender overall even though he pads the blocking stats column.

I think the Sonics missed out on a golden opportunity in drafting Simien. According to Van Gundy, Simien will see some time next year. How in the world can a guy play meaningful minutes on the deep Heat team and the Sonics draft Petro over him. Something is seriously wrong with this. We have 2 projects that are over 2 years away from even getting to the level Simien is at now.
I'm tired of this team going cheap and drafting over seas when we have good proven talent in the college ranks. Did anyone else notice the fad of drafting european players decline last year? Almost all of them slipped? I wonder why??
My last point, when does this team stop "building for the future" and start adding pieces that gets us past the 2nd round. Drafting Petro instead of Simien clearly states the inconsistent thought process that goes into your their thinking. They drafted 3 players that won't even help in the next 2 years and we aren't adding those important key pieces that good teams have; i.e. veteran back-up point guard, experianced post players. I'm not talking about breaking the bank, just add pieces that were missing last year. Who besides Lewis can command a double team on the block? Who will back up Potapenko? Swift? In fairness to this young man who's only 19, he can't be asked to add important minutes in a playoff game. He's way too far away. I know Jack Sikma and when he mentioned in the papers that Swift needs to show some fire, that's real concerning. That's not Sikma's M.O. Decent big men in the league cost extra; you can always find a decent 1,2,3 or even 4.
This is the time Schultz should anit up and pay some$$$. Do some research, we aren't even close to the luxury tax. This is where I think Locke misses it and had a golden opportunity when he interviewed Schultz on the air to push the envelope. Look, I don't get why people care if athletes use performance enhancing drugs -- or, in the case of Randy Moss, performance dehancing drugs (as weed, hash, shrooms, et al., aren't 'xactly going to work one up like amphetamines or get one jacked up like steroids) -- because every aspect of what an indivdual does to improve their innate talents is unnatural (e.g., lifting weights, learning the aspects of a specifc sport, et cetera . . .), so this bitch-fest needs to stop.
