If Fran Vazquez drops to 25 wouldn't he be a better pick than Martynas Andriuskevicius?

This mock is about the worse scenario for the Sonics. If it plays out like this I think they might take one of the young Euro centers like Ilic rather then Hodge.

The question I have on Vazquez is if he is has an floor time on a team with Collison and Vlady.

Nate is legit on the boards of all the teams in the bottom 8 of the first round. I think someone is going to pull the trigger. Surpisingly, I would say he is less of a risk, because you know exactly what you are getting.

Neither Collison or Vlade strike me as players that are likely to play more than 34 mpg anytime soon which still leaves 28 minutes available at the 4 and the 5. It depends on whether you think Collison can play the 5 for extended minutes. If you do think Collison can play the 5 and you don't think that Swift will play major minutes next season then Vazquez would be behind Fortson on the depth chart but could take Fortson's minutes when he's suspended or in a funk. That seems like a fine situations for a rookie.

What happens the year after that is another question, but I'm a strong believer that you don't pass on an otherwise attractive player because you're worried about having too much depth. There are always injuries and too much depth can become just barely enough depth pretty quickly.

[Disclaimer: I've never seen Vazquez play and am basing my comments strictly on web commentary]

what's wrong with the high scooler Ellis? Sure he's thin but shouldn't the supes be looking at a combo guard cause it looks like AD(or dirty as I like to call him) will sadly not be in the green and gold come Oct. I'd rather have jack but it seems unlikely to last that long.

I fear the Sonics will miss out if they neglect to draft "some French power forward".

After all, if the Spurs are after him he's going to turn out great, just like "some French point guard" and "some Argintinean guard/forward" did.

hodge does have the advantage of probably being able to play a little at three positions and might be a worthwhile bench depth insurance even if he doesnt become particularly strong at any one spot.

i also wonder if nate mcmillian sees any of himself in him. similar size, some of the same skills and negative raps. dont know if he could catch the defensive fire of nate but the sonic emphasis on it seemed to draw some good stuff out of damien wilkins.

locke, i didnt see your comments on hodge in the next lower article honest but it is good to see almost the same exact analysis of how he might fit.

i assume the french power forward in question is petro

Anonymous said...

no, wait. i guess the french power forward cant be petro if he was on locke's list separately and the guy is supposed to be a surprise. i'll try to figure it out.

mahinmi sounds pretty interesting. maybe the sonics should steal him from the spurs depending on who else is on the board.

wonder if he wants to come over right away or wait. could work either way. sonics might prefer to wait but with the 14 man rosters and ndbl option they could do a little of that and maybe use him later in the season if he looks good.

shouldn't the mock draft have portland at 27 now?

Anonymous said...

You left out Joey Graham.

I like the Sonics picking Hodge, his shooting leaves alot to be desired but he's a fairly complete player and serves multiple purposes which could help the sonics, and I think he'd buy into Nate's defensive philosophies.

"I really hope the sonics pick Nate Robinson in the first round. He is so good its crazy. I think Tre Simmons in the sencond round would be a good fit also. With the 55th pick I think the sonics should pick Will Conroy."

Does this sound like someone you know?

I'm sick and tired of the hommer wanabe Softy UW fans in this town. Welcome to the nba draft. Where their are lots of great players from other schools available. Please Sonics please! Take a college player from UNC or Kansas, maybe even Georga Tech. Just please not UW.

Sonic EJ-

Agree that Graham is probably going in the first round. I'm hoping that the Sonics get either Jack or Andriuskevicius (I think it is pronounced "andrus - ka - viscious"). The Sonics scouting director seemed to be very high on him on Locke's show yesterday.

Totally agree. Luther Head would be a nice combo guard to replace Daniels as well.

Summantion of reaction to your comments
Jack seems hot today. Sonics would like him.
Vazquez is anywhere between 10 and 25.
Nate is actually a more secure pick then you think, you now what you are getting.
Project Swift to take JJ's minutes next year.
Ellis is not physically ready he is mentally. He may get drafted in the first, some thought he had a promise.
No the french power forward is not petro and is not genabel(sonics like him in the 2nd)
Chris Taft is off some peoples board due to lack of work ethic,

I think "Some French Power Forward" by the Spurs is a decoy to try to get other teams to pick him up and letting one of the players they really want to slip to them.

david, you didnt comment on mahinmi and alain koffi. i am going to assume because you promised somebody not to say it until after the draft. i can respect that but i remain fairly confident it is one of them. i couldnt find other pf's from france mentioned.

"wayne simien is repeative of a lot they have already" david locke on the radio

somewhat repeative of nick collison, but not really. simien has an in between jump shot, collison does not. simien should be able to post some guys inside, collison has not shown that ability yet.

simien should be at least an average reobunder, maybe good. he is not reggie evans but if we dont keep him he isnt repetitive of that either.

i hear the sonics like kleiza who is mainly a four but the sonics think could be a 3 & 4. but if simien lost 10-15 pounds he might be able to do that too.and simien has more talent than keliza i assume.

i predicted correctly that it was Ian Mahinmi. and from comments on the radio it seems that locke didnt know his name, just that it was some french guy. no biggie, but i posted it hours ago if he had wanted it.
