SHOULD THE DAWGS MAKE A CHANGE AT QB?

Let’s put the focus on the Huskies QB situation. Stanback’s numbers looked great 14 of 18 for 208 yards and no interceptions. However, I am not sold he is the answer. Let me make this very clear. I don’t believe that the Huskies record would be greatly different if they had a different quarterback. I like what he does most of the time, maybe even as much as 85% of the time.

However, I believe playing QB is a multiple choice question. Let’s say on every play there are 5 choices. 1 of them is the best answer, 3 of them are good answers considering the circumstances and 1 of them is F. That 1 is an inexcusable error. It is a critical error. Quarterbacks can’t give F answers. Stanback gives way to many F answers. Those F answers make me wonder if he wins games even when this team gets better.

Look at Saturday, they aren’t winning under any circumstances. But 4 F answers in the first half changed the game. Score was 14-10 when he throws an inexcusably bad lateral pass to Cody Ellis that becomes a fumble and a quick USC score. That is a mistake a QB can’t make. Next drive, 1ns and 10 they call a screen. USC blitzs the corner and it has a chance to be huge and Stanback panics and misses the pass. These are two easy play calls that the coordinator calls in order to relieve pressure. #3 on the next drive he botches the hand-off with Kenny James. It is not clear where the blame lies here, it looked like Stanback, but James didn’t play again after that play and lastly the most egregious error. 3rd and 11 with :30 on the clock to end the half and Stanback is flushed and runs and he goes out of bounds to stop the clock 4 yards short of the first down. Think about this. The idea of going out of bounds should never cross his mind. First he needs to get the first down, second if he doesn’t get the first down you don’t want to stop the clock, he had no understanding of time and score and those things kill me.

Those F’s kill me. Lastly, and this may not be fair but, QB is the one position that can change a teams mood. Whether or not it is Stanback’s fault the Huskies are losing and need a jolt. Changing QB’s is the only position on the field that can create that jolt. Is it the right answer, honestly I don’t know, but I am not convinced that with the amount of F’s Stanback makes you can win.

I think he brings too much to the table with his running at this point to make a change.

Sick with Stanback and hope for the best, he's the least of the problems from my view.

Totally disagree!! I think he was one of the few bright spots on the offensive side of the football. He's constantly having to go through his reads in such a quick fashion because our offensive line is terrible. They are constantly getting blown up at the line of scrimmage. This area drastically needs to improve.

And by the way, don't blame that lateral on Stanback. I agree it was not a good pass, but clearly it hit the receiver right in the hands. Any receiver will tell you when a ball hits their hands like that - it should be caught.

I like what Willingham is doing and I honestly feel this program is heading in the right dirrection. The bottom line is he needs talent, especially on the offensive and defensive fronts.

I can't say that all the blame has to go on Stanback. He isn't responsible for dropped passes, lack of rushing attack, defensive shortcomings, etc.
However, the Huskies have not won with him at the helm and he was one of the three QB's last year that didn't produce. Why not let Durocher play ? Or even let Hasty carry the ball some? The Huskies have nothing to lose. We already know what the other quarterbacks can do. Durocher is the only one who we know nothing about. Could he be a better quarterback for this offense than Stanback? The only way to know is to play him. He came from a winning high school program and led his team to victories. Isaiah never had that feeling at Garfield. I hope that Ty doesn't get too attached to Stanback and plays him because he is afraid to create a controversy. But what if Durocher is able to run the offense better than Stanback. Will there be a controversy then? Play Durocher. Go!Johnny Go!

Sure, sit Stanback. And bring in (drum roll) Casey Paus? Please. Give Stanback a running game and he might not be so confused trying to pick his receivers out of the 14 d-backs covering them.

Please, play the reject form Oregon. At least he knows what it's like to win, even if it's with the Dawgs.

Stanback would be more successful if he knew when he should or shouldn't run. In my opinion he holds on to the ball way too long and has a tendency to force his passes. His decision making needs to improve as Ty has said many times. A quarterback is the leader of any football team and if you asked the players who their leader is I bet that there would either be a lot of different answers or " I don't really know". Husky quarterbacks in the past took charge of their teams (Moon, Huard, Brunell, Tui, Chandler, Hobert, Millen, etc. and that is what made their teams successful. Stanback has yet to do that and until he does or whomever, this Husky team will not have confidence in the system. I hope that Ty recruits strictly linemen (big and fast)defense and offense next year (like the Schilling kid). The Boise State coach was asked what he looked for in recruiting his players and he said that they didn't necessarily recruit the big name athletes, but focused on their speed. As a result, look at what their team has been able to do in the last few years. They score points fast and at all different ways. I hope that Ty does this if he is to compete with the likes of an USC or Cal for that matter. Speed kills and the Huskies don't have it.

Hey black,

What is Stanbacks overall winning percentage after a year and a half?

I rest my case. LOL

Myk - it's amusing to me that you put the record on Stanbacks shoulders. To me that proves you don't have a clue on how to judge a QB. If you listened to Coach Willingham yesterday, he gave Stanback a very high rating for his performance aganst USC. You can't just compare what Durocher has done during 4th quarter mop up time against Stanbacks time.

Also, pinning the record on Stanback shoulders is another mistake; the talent around him (spefifically the OL) and the defensive side of the football has been a HUGE dissapointment. And playing Hasty now would be pointless - why waste a year of eligibility? We just need to ride out the year and let Willingham bring in better plays. Let's face it - this team doesn't have much talent!!

Anonymous,

Have we seen enough of Stanback to see that he doesn't have what it takes to be a trusted leader of this team? Nobody is asking him to play defense, offense, and special teams. All that is asked of him is to run the offense the way it is suppose to. Guys on the team will look at a quarterback for any sense of hope and Stanback doesn't bring it. They need someone back there who they know can get the ball into the receivers hands when they need to and to convert on third down when they have to. He is not the quarterback for this team. He would be perfect for a wishbone offense where they run the quarterback a lot. Durocher is more suitable to this offense because he is a natural drop back passer and has more poise in the pocket from what we have seen.

Myk.

If Isaiah was a team player then he would have complied with coaches when he was asked to try another position other than QB. Staying with Isaiah is dragging the whole team down and not giving Johnny a shot at improving the team.

Myk,

I do think that it's time for Johnny to get a shot just to see what has and if the team will rally around him. Obviously, this team lacks the talent to compete with even the mediocre teams out there. Isaiah has been given as much of an opportunity to run this offense and has not had much luck. We need to salvage as much of this season as we can and find out what the likes of Hasty, Durocher, etc. can do so that Ty knows what he needs to recruit for next year.

If they want Stanback and his big plays in the game, them play him in the proper position. If his greatest asset is running the ball, either line him up as a wide out or switch him to DB. Everyone wants the next Mike Vick, the only problem is they're hard to find. 1-6 doesn't leave a very good taste in anyones mouth.

Myk, you're getting way too emotional in your thinking. I was simpling saying Stanback is the best QB on this team, I'm not saying he's one of the best in the conference. Also, you keep pointing out that he's a junior making freshman decisions (which I don't agree). You need to remember he's had 3 different systems to learn due to the coaching changes.

I think playing Hasty would've been a good decision if you're in bowl contention, but you're not. I know the Bellevue kids personally (EJ and Hasty) and they weren't even considering UW before the coaching change. At some point you need to have some trust in Coach Willingham and believe that he's making the best decisions for this program.
